China’s pen and pencil-making industry is the world’s largest in terms of production and exports. The output of ballpoint pens and mechanical pencils ranks third globally. A large quantity of ballpoints sold on the Chinese market are not brand names but tend to be low end products. Because of the restructuring of the world economy, labour-intensive industries such as pen-making, garment making and musical instrument making have gradually shifted from developed countries to developing countries such as China. Internally the market is undergoing a major shift as the Chinese move from using cheap pencils to ballpoint pens. China is also increasingly becoming a major centre of production for all forms of pens and is increasing its exports as third world countries increasingly shift from pencil to pen usage.
