Since 2000, the demand in China's auto air bag market has been increasing at an average speed of more than 200% every year. By 2004 the total market scale had reached nearly 4 million sets. Currently, there are nearly 20 Chinese domestic enterprises are producing air bags with a total output more than two million sets.
The auto air bag enterprises in China are basically divided into two groups, foreign-funded and domestic enterprises. Foreign-funded enterprises are mainly represented by Autoliv, Plast, Takawa, Mobis ect, those are controlling 80% shares of the total market, especially for the middle and high end markets.
The Chinese domestic companies are mainly represented by Jinheng of Jinzhou City, East Joy Long, BYD of Shanghai, their production only accounting for 15% market shares, and their products are mainly used in economical passenger vehicles.
After the peak of Air Bag importation, there was a negative growth in imports during the first half of 2005.
Since the end of 2004, multinational air bag enterprises have invested in the production of Air Bag components in China, which has enhanced the ability of local component supply. By 2007, more than 80% of Air Bag components will be manufactured locally.
