| Travel and Tourism - Gambia |
About this report The Gambia is West Africa at its most accessible. The smallest country in Africa has proven a popular tourist destination, due to its close proximity to Europe (only six hours from Gatwick), tropical climate, attractive beaches and friendly, English-speaking people.
Gaining independence in 1965, the Gambia was quick to establish itself as a tourist destination, with the first visitors coming from Sweden in 1967. Since then, progress has been slow but steady, although hindered by political disturbance, namely the coup in 1994 and a protest in 2000 that resulted in serious bloodshed. As the political situation has now improved again, the Gambian tourist market is returning to the health that it enjoyed in 1999, encouraging tourists from Northern Europe in greater numbers than ever and making inroads into the US market.
With improved infrastructure, better global connections and hotel developments of an international standard, the Gambia is well situated to build upon its already strong winter sun market and become the year-round destination that it promotes itself as.
