| Travel and Tourism - Madagascar |
About this report Madagascar, the world’s fourth largest island, boasts an array of flora and fauna. Its coast stretches 5,000km, representing numerous opportunities for developing resort-based tourism. Presently, few individuals outside the scientific community venture to this island. France is still the dominant market, commanding close to 60% of all arrivals. Notably, according to the UNWTO, Madagascar experienced a 73.1% increase in the number of arrivals between 2000 and 2005, a figure double that of Africa as a whole and four times higher than the global average, highlighting Madagascar’s strong potential as a tourism destination.
Tourism has been identified by the Malagasy government as one of their top socio-economic development priorities. It has adopted a proactive approach to improve the island’s tourism performance and prospects, with its masterplan focusing upon improving local economies, overcoming infrastructure constraints, implementing tourism policy reforms and addressing environmental and social problems. On the other hand, funding for tourism marketing and promotion remains low, although there has been significant improvement in the business environment in the last five years, and there is now growing interest amongst private investors to construct tourism facilities, particularly hotels and resorts.
