Pipeline Insight: Breast Cancer - A diverse and increasingly crowded pipeline

Introduction

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide. In 2006, more than 447,000 cases of the disease are expected to be diagnosed in the seven major pharmaceutical markets. High unmet needs still persist for this tumor type. Despite recent drug approvals in the adjuvant and metastatic setting, the overall survival remains below five years.

Scope

*Overview of breast cancer and the current treatment options, including profiles and analysis of existing drugs

*Insightful analysis of clinical trial data for late-phase drugs in development for breast cancer

*Future global sales of key pipeline drugs for breast cancer to 2016, including their clinical/research and commercial attractiveness

*Datamonitor's assessment of the clinical and commercial potential of the drugs currently in development for breast cancer

Highlights

There are at least 144 candidates in the breast cancer pipeline of which, 26% are molecular targeted therapeutics (MTTs). Due to the cytostatic nature of several MTTs, significant tumor regressions will likely be achieved when combined with cytotoxics. As cytotoxics comprise one-third of the pipeline, they will remain the backbone of treatment.

Datamonitor believes Genentech/Roche's Avastin (bevacizumab) will earn blockbuster status within the breast cancer market. Unlike Herceptin, Avastin is not limited to HER-2 positive tumors and will have a major impact on first-line metastatic disease. Avastin will dominate the breast cancer market with 2016 sales approaching $1.5bn.

GlaxoSmithKline's' Tykerb (lapatinib) will expand treatment options for HER-2 positive, Herceptin-refractory, locally advanced and metastatic patients, with approval likely by early-2007. As an estimated 40% of patients are Herceptin-refractory, Tykerb's sales could reach over $500m by 2016 in this setting alone.

Reasons to Purchase

*Assess opportunities and risks in the breast cancer market by analyzing the clinical and commercial attractiveness of key agents

*Evaluate the potential of your product in the breast cancer market by examining key pipeline drug sales forecasts

*Determine the commercial impact of new molecular-targeted agents entering the breast cancer market and their effects on current treatment paradigms
