| Travel and Tourism - Hungary |
About this report Hungary is a luminary amongst its post-Soviet compatriots, and since 2000, it has seen a 133% rise in gross domestic product (GDP) despite difficult global economic conditions and other extenuating factors. Tourism has had a less stellar but no less significant performance, with the number of foreign arrivals staying in commercial accommodation rising by 14% whilst those arriving at frontiers increasing by 23%.
Nonetheless, in spite of the rising number of foreign visits, spending has not increased exponentially. In addition, the economic benefits of tourism are not being dispersed evenly throughout the country, as close to two-thirds of inbound arrivals congregate in the capital, Budapest, and the traditional holiday resort of Lake Balaton. Meanwhile, its hotel industry is still reeling from overcapacity, with revenue per available room (REVPAR) reaching only approximately half of the European Union (EU) average.
On a positive note, Hungary has managed to establish itself as a centre of the culture and the arts, and it is now experiencing renewed interest in its spa and wellness heritage, which forms an integral part of its National Tourism Development Strategy (NTDS). Visitor numbers are envisioned to continue growing in Hungary, although, with over 95% of its foreign visitors deriving from Europe, Hungary possesses the unenviable task of widening its appeal to other international markets, notably that of Japan and China, in what is already a congested tourism marketplace.
