| Travel and Tourism - Slovakia |
About this report Slovakia has a comparatively underdeveloped tourism industry, particularly when you compare it to its neighbours and competitors: Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland. At times it is characterised by poor management, inadequate co-ordination, fragmented services and substandard products. In addition many Slovaks regard tourism related jobs as low status, and a number of unauthorised tour guides and unregistered accommodation providers operate outside of the official tourism industry. The Ministry of the Economy for the Slovak Republic: Department of Tourism’s strategic development plan – ‘Tourism Development Strategy of the Slovak Republic until 2013’ – seeks to address these problems. It also highlights the country’s commitment to developing a robust and sustainable tourism industry.
Slovakia’s 2004 accession to the European Union (EU) should be a catalyst for tourism expansion, due to an enlarged marketplace and the ease with which citizens of fellow member states can now travel to the country, as a result of open skies agreements and more relaxed border formalities. Structural funds from the EU are also being used to support tourism development within the country. Statistics for 2005 highlight the positive growth that has already occurred in Slovakia’s tourism industry.
