With an estimated 165 million users at year-end 2001, the Asia-Pacific region

constitutes the worlds largest internet market, ahead of both Europe and

North America.

on aggregated research data from government and international statistical agencies

as well as dozens of leading research firms, it helps you understand the composition

and habits of the online population in this vast and increasingly important

region of internet and e-commerce development.

Over 180 Million Users by the End of the Year

Despite a sluggish global economy, including persistent stumbles in Japan, consumer

demand for devices such as computers, mobile phones and personal digital assistants

(PDAs) has remained consistent throughout the region, and internet usage is

rising.

The Asia-Pacific region already constitutes the worlds largest internet

market, and is expected to grow to 181.5 million users by year-end 2002.

This population is composed largely of internet users from three countries:

Japan, China and South Korea. They make up nearly three-quarters of the regions

internet user population, says Dr. Nevin Cohen, Senior Analyst at eMarketer

and co-author of the report. Japan has the regions largest number

of internet users, but China, thanks to its sheer size, is number two. India,

despite a population of one billion and a globally competitive software industry,

still has a relatively small number of internet users.

South Korea leads the region in internet penetration, as the chart below shows.

Proactive government support of internet diffusion and an advanced communications

and technology infrastructure have resulted in an internet penetration rate

of 51.1%. By contrast, the regions population giants like China, Indonesia

and India suffer from relatively low internet penetration rates.
