| The Ocean Energy Report Ed 2 2005 |
|
|
The Ocean Energy Report provides a comprehensive review of tidal, wave, ocean thermal and marine current technologies, with their state of development as emerging technologies and industries. The status of each ocean energy industry is described in each country where it has a base or is under trial. The Ocean Energy Report also notes how ocean energy is mostly in an experimental stage but how some of its component technologies have the potential to become mainstream energy sources and are now being trialed. Many ideas have been generated and a lot of experimental ocean energy projects are being funded both by governments and commercially. These ocean energy projects range from technologies and schemes which produce small amounts of energy for local, often dedicated use, to large scale ocean energy projects which can or will be capable of supplying energy in quantities sufficient to feed into a grid. Within the Ocean Energy Report we explain the four different ways in which energy can be harvested: Tidal energy - most countries which have investigated the potential exploitation of tidal energy have concentrated on the use of barrages and only around 20 tidal energy sites in the world have been identified as possible tidal power stations; Wave energy – this is generated by the movement of devices, either stationary or floating on the surface of the ocean and moved by waves; Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) - this is a means of converting into useful energy the temperature difference between surface water of the oceans in tropical and sub-tropical areas; Marine current energy – this ocean energy can be generated from marine currents using completely submerged turbines comprised of rotor blades and a generator. The Ocean energy report outlines these technologies, with their state of development as technologies and industries.
