Operators in this industry provide specialized road transportation for cargo using trucks and trailers. Local trucking establishments provide trucking within a metropolitan area that may cross state lines. Generally the trips are same-day return. Specialized freight transportation is the movement of cargo that, because of its size, weight, shape, or other inherent characteristics, requires specialized equipment for transportation. Firms in this industry transport automobiles, gravel, sand, dirt, chemicals, frozen goods, livestock, milk and petroleum among other things. This industry does not include firms that transport non-specialized freight (NAICS 48411), used goods (NAICS 48421), or any freight between metropolitan areas (NAICS 48412 and NAICS 48423).
