Industry Definition

The US Logging industry buys and leases log harvesting equipment and vehicles from relevant wholesalers and retailers and uses them to fell trees, which are then transported as sawlogs to sawmills and pulp mills. The industry is not engaged in breeding, planting or growing the trees, nor managing the forest in which logs are derived. Rather, this is undertaken by forest nurseries (NAICS 11321) and timber tract managers (NAICS 11311) respectively. This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in one or more of the following: (1) cutting timber; (2) cutting and transporting timber; and (3) producing wood chips in the field.
