Executive Summary China's gift packaging industry has flourished hand-in-hand with its consumer packaging segment, which ranks among the world's top three in terms of sales revenue. As mainland suppliers continue to target the US and EU, packaging exports are projected to experience double-digit year-on-year growth.
Shipments of gift ribbons, for instance, reached nearly 40 kilo tons worth US$166.7 in 2006. This is an increase of 18 percent in volume and 35 percent in value terms over the previous year.
In order to meet growing domestic and foreign demand, China gift packaging makers are investing in larger factories and sophisticated equipment. The resulting increase in production capacity — as well as manufacturing capability — is substantial as some companies will almost double their current output.
The rising cost of raw materials, however, is a cause for concern. For example, prices for various types of paper and plastic have jumped by as much as 20 percent, while that of nylon used primarily for gift packaging accessories has tripled since 2006.
Higher employee wages and revaluation of the yuan further drive up production costs, and suppliers are hard-pressed for solutions. Some plan to source raw materials in bulk, and others have modified product designs to reduce shipping costs. Adjusting finished product prices is a last resort, since competition among the thousands of suppliers is fierce.
The following are some of the key trends we see in China's gift packaging industry: • Printing techniques will improve as suppliers become more willing to purchase advanced equipment. Investment in imported machines, color-matching systems and additional surface treatments such as foil-stamping and embossing means that new releases will feature more than the traditional offset-printed patterns. • Some manufacturers are going “green” and switching to eco-friendly materials and production methods. Specifically, environment-conscious buyers will be able to find more products bearing EN 71 certification and FDA approval. • Prices will increase during the next 12 months but usually no more than 10 percent. In fact, many companies plan to absorb rising costs rather than to pass them on to buyers.
