US fuel cell market to expand sixfold through 2012 The US market for commercial fuel cell products and services is forecast to expand almost sixfold through 2012 to $975 million and reach $3.3 billion by 2017. Demand will be bolstered by ongoing environmental concerns that will spur social interest in less pollutant energy sources, as well as continued efforts to reduce US dependence on foreign oil. The commercial market will be somewhat restrained, on the other hand, by persistent cost hurdles, particularly in motor vehicle applications, as many types of fuel cells require a highpriced platinum catalyst as well as extensive investment in R&D.

More Details
Portable electronics to be most rapidly growing market The market for fuel cells used to power portable electronics is expected to advance at the most rapid pace through 2012, as technological advancements have enabled these fuel cells to outperform most types of batteries used for similar purposes. As portable wireless devices continue to advance in intelligence and functionality, fuel cells are better able to meet their increased energy requirements by providing longer operational time, while simultaneously eliminating the need for an electronic outlet for recharging. The electric power generation market will continue to comprise almost half of commercial demand in 2012, as molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) and solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which have proven to be ideal for electricity production, continue to become more cost efficient. Demand for fuel cells used in military/ aerospace applications is projected to lag all other markets, as the US Space Shuttle, a steady user of alkaline fuel cells, is expected to retire in 2010. The motor vehicle market for fuel cells is also expected to rise at a below-average pace due to cost barriers. The growing popularity of hybrid vehicles will also restrain growth in the segment, as hybrids are viewed by many as a cleaner and more efficient alternative to conventional gasoline-powered vehicles. By 2017, however, fuel cell-powered vehicles are expected to expand their market presence, as ongoing R&D drives down costs.
Direct methanol fuel cells to be fastest growing type Among the six main fuel cell chemistries, the market for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) is expected to advance at the most rapid pace through 2012, supported by their increased use in portable electronic applications. Nonetheless, proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells will continue to comprise the largest share of stack and system demand, as their versatility continues to spur more allocation to R&D when compared to all other fuel cell chemistries.
Study coverage This new Freedonia industry study, Fuel Cells, is available for $4500. It presents historical demand data (2002, 2007) plus forecasts for 2012, 2017 and 2025 by fuel cell chemistry, fuel, device and application. The study also considers market environment factors, evaluates company market share and profiles leading industry competitors.
