| Waste Management and Remediation |
|
|
US demand to approach $120 billion in 2012 US demand for waste management and remediation services was more than $80 billion in 2007. Through 2012, demand is forecast to increase 6.6 percent per year, approaching $120 billion. Waste management and remediation services will benefit from the ongoing need in the US to collect, transport, treat and dispose of all types of waste. The growing interest in recycling and composting will also support demand for waste management services. Price increases are expected to decelerate over the period, primarily becuase of moderating fuel costs. However, the intense regulatory environment will continue to increase disposal costs, offsetting lower fuel costs somewhat.

More Details
Remediation, material recovery to grow fastest The waste management and remediation service industry comprises waste collection, waste treatment and disposal, remediation, and material recovery and other waste management services. Among these segments, waste collection represented the largest share of demand in 2007. Healthy growth is expected through 2012 for waste collection services, as the growing interest in recycling will bolster the need for recyclable material collection services. Through 2012, remediation and material recovery services are anticipated to provide the fastest growth in the industry. Remediation services will continue to benefit from the ongoing interest in public and environmental safety, as well as from redevelopment of “brownfields.” Material recovery services will see strong growth due to the increasing interest in recycling in the US and the reuse of materials in the manufacturing market. Waste treatment and disposal services are projected to see the slowest gains among the major waste management services through 2012, hampered by market maturity. In addition, growing environmental and regulatory pressures, which will limit the amount of solid waste generated, will restrain demand. Furthermore, the number of active municipal solid waste landfills are forecast to continue to decline. It can take up to ten years for a new landfill to become operational, limiting market expansion. However, as existing landfills are closed, tipping fees are expected to increase, offsetting these negative factors.
Government to remain largest waste market Demand for waste management and remediation services arises from a variety of markets. In 2007, the government market (including the value of services provided by government entities) was the largest user of waste management and remediation services, with more than one-quarter of the total. Through 2012, this market is anticipated to provide the best growth opportunities for waste management and remediation services, primarily because of the ongoing shift away from service provision by internal waste departments to third-party providers of waste services. Demand from the residential, service industries, and construction and demolition markets will also provide healthy gains through 2012, aided by increasing interest in recycling and concern for the environment.
Study coverage This new Freedonia industry study, Waste Management & Remediation, is priced at $4500. It presents historical demand data (1997, 2002 and 2007) plus forecasts for 2012 and 2017 by service, market and region of the US. The study also assesses market environment factors, evaluates company market share data and profiles 28 active participants in the US industry.
